Video

*start*

Fade-in to early morning within a section of mausoleums. Slow pan over the masonry followed by tight close-up of mourner statue. Slow pull back reveals and stops on a blond's head, face hidden by the long golden hair, resting in her lap.

The camera lingers lovingly on the peaceful scene for several minutes, then continues pull back...

Deserter, traitor~! Millennium's unfinished business! Did you truly think I'd forget about this?

Floor of a slaughter house would look pristine in comparison. Viscera, bone and other things are artfully arranged around the large red symbol gleaming wetly in the autumn sun.

The Applications Thread: Coming Soon--More Space!

Ladies and Gentlemen~!!

Welcome to November! (But it's half over already...) We come bearing announcements:

The application thread is...rather full.

Thirty-one pages? Wow. That's a lot of apps!

So! What does this mean?

This means that we will very soon have a new applications thread.

There's nothing different about it or the applications system at all. There's just a shiny, empty, new thread forthcoming. So if you have the old thread bookmarked, you'll want to change your bookmarks when the new thread is made.

You see, sooner or later, you start getting close to maxing out the number of pages and comments you can have in a post. And, so far as we could tell, we were getting close--!

The old (full) applications thread is very shortly going to be closed, locked, and set to private (but not deleted, in case the mods need to retrieve something from it).

→ But before we close up the old thread for good, we want to give you an opportunity to copy any applications you may have posted there if you want a record of them. Just a little ctrl + c → ctrl + v, just a little print scrn → MSPaint. However you roll. So hit up the old applications thread and snag your apps.

We'll be leaving the old applications thread open through Monday, November 16th, 11:59pm EST so you can copy your applications.

Meanwhile, watch for the new thread ♥ It will be ready for the first next application week in December.

Questions? Comments? Various foodstuffs? Drop a line!

I have one. Why so much linking, Robot-mod? Well, the old thread will be a little tricky to find once the new one is the linked-to one, so I wanted to make the location easy to find so everyone could copy their old apps. This was the best I could do for the moment.

Or both.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Papered in postcards

A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to send in postcards to surround us with LiveJournal community. Thanks for coming through! We've received postcards all the way from Germany, Finland, and Canada and from all over the US, including Texas, Florida, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Indiana, Hawaii, and Oklahoma just to name just a handful. We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Please keep the love coming for one more week by writing to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be drawing the names of ten random contributors next Thursday to win paid account credits!

We have more dazzling images posted by talented LiveJournal photographers from around the world. We're hoping to span the entire globe, so please continue posting and tagging. Of course, you can also sit back and enjoy the view at [info]lj_photophile.

Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT

EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP.

Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!!

Thanks [info]mhwest and [info]dnewhall for helping out!

---

On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

† 145 [accidental video post/comment log]

[The device flickers on and begins to record from the front right angle where one of her knights have been standing on the field. There are a couple of corpses in the ground, Methuselah and Terran. From beneath the crowd of cross-bearing squad, Lilith steps into view, dressed and bejeweled with an exotic choice of wardrobe. She seems taken out of a Hindu pantheon deity picture. She's escorted by two Methuselahs who are ready to attack their former comrades if they approach them with ill intentions.]

There haven't been enough deaths... [She looks at the fallen with a sad expression, then lifts her head.] Abel?

[With the advantage of fighting his Methuselahs unable to be free to fight under the sun, she has led her Terran allies to push them outside the City ground, into this field. The day has fled into the night, but she still has the advantage of ranks.]

Stop fighting us. It's never too late to make peace and start over. I implore you to consider that. Or... Please, Abel, reconsider your position. We don't have to fight, the world is not your enemy and you don't have to be the enemy of the world.

(ooc; Ignore the wings and the World card symbol of that pic? Action for Abel? -Aion or whoever is around who wants to join either side?- All journal replies will be forward-tagged after midnight!).

Entry 354; Day 326

[Voice Post]
((Click.))
((There's no pause, nor hesitation. Cain's voice is certain and determined, but muffled as well, as though he's balancing his Network device between his shoulder and his ear. In the background are a few, very small mechanical sounds. ... And farther away still, the sounds of war.))

Fakir, I'm sure you're already standing guard over the opera house. Riff and I will too.

I admit, I'd expected all this to end last night. I kept watch from the roof and waited for midnight, but the fighting didn't end. So we may have to endure this for another day--and maybe even a third.

((There's are a few sharp metallic sounds--recognizable to some, perhaps, as bullets rattling against bullets.))

We prepared ourselves purposefully for this, you know, with those provisions.

If you're not keeping watch, you should go down to the basements. It's safest there, so long as one doesn't go down too deeply into the passageways. Stay near the surface, but keep yourself deep enough for shelter. It's served well enough before in fights and storms. And for heaven's sake, don't go out today. We'll keep the doors closed and bolted, and keep a watch on them. So far, none of the fighting seems very close. I've seen a few fights in the streets, but nothing more than that. The real fighting seems much farther out, but there's no reason to think it'll stay there.

There've been wars before here, I admit, but nothing like this. There were curses that made us think we were in the midst of war, and we've attacked one another enough times. We defended ourselves against the 'Stewards' once and, so I'm told, against the living dead another time.

((A dull, thundering sound--an explosion, perhaps, somewhere in the distance.

But I've never seen war amongst us ourselves in such a way. I saw the soliders marching by in the streets--scores of them. It's almost as though the visitors who swarm the City every so often have come back, but as soldiers, as armies following generals in the City, that's how many of them there seem to be.

((Small clicks as those rattling bullets are loaded, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... Then, a long silence...))

And where there are soldiers, there is war. And we're to use the opera house as a fortress once again.

((Another pause. Then a short, rueful laugh...))

Hah. I suppose some of you will think it amusing that I've so little to say this time. I've more important things to do today.

((A sharp click as he closes his revolver. And another sharp click as he turns off his Network device again.))
((Click.))

[//voice post ends]

[ooc: He's not fighting in the war, but he's standing guard. Once again, sharpshooting from the roof! Also, I'd like to apologize for my intense fail recently. School has been putting me through the wringer, alas. But it's starting to get back under control, so I'll be kicking around more...I think |D It'll only be icky for another few days, at least. I still feel super distracted and a little "off" so bear with me please! I promise things are clearing up.]

# 258

I see now that the embers of battle have yet to be extinguished.
Within me, the wish to spill blood cries out. The sight of broken corpses piled beneath my feet. The mountains of death.
I have abandoned that indulgence.

Take your violence to those who can defend against violence.
Struck the weak and the powerless, turn the war into a slaughter, and my sword will be pointed at your direction.

Venture within the woods and the wilderness itself would turn against you.
